*Events organized by the Matthew 25 Committee of RPC
On June 19, 1865, over 250,000 enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, received news of their emancipation 2.5 years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth has been celebrated by African Americans since the late 1800s, and the legislation making it a federal holiday was signed into law by President Biden in 2021. While Juneteenth doesn't eliminate structural racism in America, recognizing it as a federal holiday is a crucial step toward bringing the rich history of Black Americans into the center of both our history and identity. βοΈ Summer of Gratitude
We cannot say thank you enough! Each week of the summer, we will thank various leaders in the church for their gifts of time and talents.
Week 1 - Thank you to all of the behind-the-scenes folks who help make worship happen! The A/V team, the Ushers, the Communion Preparation Team, and all other unsung heroes who help organize all of the logistics of worship, like the friendship pads, pew cards, stray bulletins, offering plates, and more.

π These are just a few of the comments we received from the Be the Church campaign to visit and connect with every single member of our church.
π We’ve explored our core values (Belonging, Connecting, Transforming) during our Be the Church conversations—but what’s next?
π This summer, we’re launching a Sunday School series centered on these values. For the first two Sundays (June 1 and 8), Pastor Brian will share how RPC identified these core values and unpack what they mean for our church community. In the following weeks, you’ll hear personal stories from fellow church members about how belonging, connecting, and transforming have shaped their lives and faith journeys. Whether you can come all summer or just a few Sundays, join us for what will be an inspiring Sunday School series. We hope to see you in Thompson Parlor (Room 200) on Sundays at 9:30 am!

Senior Sunday, May 18, 2025 π
As a way to show that we are indeed the body of Christ together the congregation gave blankets to each of the high school seniors. As these blankets were passed from the back row of pews all the way to the front row, Pastor Lauren asked the congregation to participate in blessing the blankets. Here is an excerpt from the blessing:
Remember the promises you made to these young people at their baptism -
promising to guide and nurture them by word and deed, with your support and your love and your prayers.
Remember that these promises do not end, no matter how far these seniors go or how long they are away from this place.
Remember the moments you have shared them and how you have watched them grow in their faith throughout their lives, becoming faithful members of Christ’s church.
Remember to pray for them this day and every day.
Remember that we are indeed the Church, called to love, serve, and care for these beloved seniors and one another.
Excerpt from the Prayer for the Seniors:
We give you thanks, O God, for the ways you have journeyed alongside each of these seniors, through the ups and downs, through the moments of sure faith and the moments of overwhelming doubt, through the joys and pains of living.
We hope that our seniors feel the love and support of their faith family here at Riverside Presbyterian Church and we pray that they know they can always call this place home.
So, as you begin this new path of your journey, may this blanket serve as a symbol and a reminder of the continuing embrace of your family, the friendship of this youth group, the abiding care and support of this congregation, and the steadfast love of God.
May it be so.
Amen.

Each week, after worship, the chancel flowers are broken down into smaller arrangements. The Deacons deliver the arrangements to Riversiders who are grieving, celebrating, having a challenging week, etc.
This week, the Deacons still delivered flowers as usual, but additionally, everyone was invited to come up to the chancel after worship to make a small arrangement to give to their mother or a mothering figure in their life. It was so special to see all of these flowers make it from our Sanctuary into the homes of so many loved ones. May the mothers and mothering figures in each of our lives feel a little bit of extra love this week! π π
Thank you to Rebecca McNeil for organizing this!

What a joy it was to celebrate the Be the Church campaign! Thank you for visiting with a connector and sharing feedback about what is important to you and what you hope for.
π― 130 jars of honey were given out, with 123 of those jars given in person. Honey is mentioned more than 60 times in both the old and New Testament, and represents three things: God’s land and rescue, God’s word, God’s gifts and grace. The committee thought this was the perfect symbol of the Be the Church initiative.
16 neighborhood areas
57 zip codes
36 team leaders
71 connectors
1 fantastic committee to lead the campaign
Thank you to all who were involved in the campaign and to those who helped make this May 4 lunch and celebration happen.
π If you would like to read more about what we are learning from the feedback that was received, please pick up a Be the Church report in the church office. There will be some workshop opportunities over the summer to continue the conversations that were broached most frequently throughout the visits. We hope these workshops will help us further sharpen our focus on our mission and clarify our sense of identity and purpose as a church so we can magnify our core values of belonging, connecting, and transforming. π π

Welcome to the 2025 Confirmation class!
Since the fall, this Confirmation class has learned and discerned, studied and asked, reflected and wondered. On Sunday, April 6, the Confirmands were invited to enjoy breakfast with their families, mentors, and teachers. Pastor Lauren encouraged them to soak it all in; feel the love and support of those surrounding them and to be present, right here and right now. After breakfast, the Session convened to ask the membership questions of these confirmands, and this group was then recognized and prayed for during the 10:30 worship service.
πHoly One, Holy Three - we trust that you journey with us throughout our lives. We give you particular thanks for journeying with Mitchell, Anderson, Ellie, Kimbrough, Camp, Haiden, Caroline, Preston, Jimmy, Candler, Margot, Courtland, and Charlotte to this moment. We also trust, O God, that you love us abundantly, more than we could ever imagine. We give you thanks for the confirmation families, mentors, and teachers who have guided them, nurtured them, and loved them throughout this confirmation experience. We give you thanks for this congregation, Riverside Presbyterian Church, and for all of the ways this community guides, nurtures, and loves each of us.
π·Thank you to Mike and Susan Erdelyi for capturing these beautiful moments!

π A few weeks before Easter, children of the church took caterpillars home to watch their metamorphosis from a caterpillar to a cocoon to a butterfly.
π¦ On Easter Sunday, some of those butterflies were released in Riverside Park across the street from the church.
π Here is the blessing Emily shared before the butterfly release:
When Jesus was raised from the dead, all the people were amazed at what God had done. God, please help us to be amazed at the small miracles of resurrection all around us. Butterflies, sunshine, rainbows, buds on plants, flowers in bloom, friends and family all remind us that your presence is everywhere. Thank you for the small and big miracles of life all around us. Amen.

ππ·On Maundy Thursday we remember the last night of Christ’s life, as we begin the journey to the cross. The word “Maundy” is derived from the Latin word “commandment,” and recalls the “new commandment” Christ gave his disciples the night before he died: love one another as I have loved you.

On March 30, a new class of Deacons and Elders were ordained and installed into service. For the prayer at the end of the installation, all previously ordained Deacons and Elders are asked to come lay their hands upon the new class of Deacons and Elders. What a beautiful image this is of our church family!
Excerpt from the prayer used during the service:
Gracious God, through the waters of baptism, you have claimed us as your own and called us to share in Christ’s ministry. Pour out your Holy Spirit upon us, that we may discern the gifts you have given, calling them forth from one another, and together use these gifts for the good of all. In obedience to Christ, and in the unity of his Spirit, may we proclaim good news, make disciples, be light and leaven, share our bread, offer a cup of cold water, wash one another’s feet. Make us strong in Christ to live as your people and show forth your saving love in the world, by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

As Pastor Brian mentioned in today’s sermon, Michael has often been a shepherd to the flock at the corner of Park and Post with years of dedication and kindness that have touched countless lives.
πThank you to the party planning committee and everyone who set tables, prepared food, arranged flowers, cleaned dishes, cut cake, and more.

“In this circular image, two figures lean in over the tree; their heads are full of ideas for fruiting, their bodies are full of dead fig leaf patterns. (The two circular shapes with fruit seeds inside of them represent the figures’ heads; the branch-like imagery beneath the heads represent their shoulders.) Their ideas and dreams have not born fruit. They converse about how to cultivate growth. Then one pushes back against the other and creates tension, discord. From that tension comes an opening, letting the fig tree have its time and space to thrive.”

The gardener in the vineyard knows the fig tree needs rest, nutrients, and time—and it also needs to produce fruit. Both things are true, which is also true for us. If we are always striving for more growth without taking time to rest, we will burn out. But if we are only ever resting, we won’t bear fruit or grow. The fig tree also teaches us that the in between time—of nurture before fruit—can be where transformation begins. | @sanctifiedart

In many translations, Jesus says that “Mary has chosen the better part,” which has been used to create a divide between Mary and Martha. However, in the Greek, Mary has chosen the “good portion,” and Martha’s tasks are called “ministry.” Therefore, perhaps Mary represents our faith, our desire to know God intimately, and Martha represents our good works, our desire to transform the world. Both are needed, and both are good. | @sanctifiedart

πGod calls us together to Be God’s Churchπ
“Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together and encourage one another.” Hebrews 10: 24-25
Be the Church is an effort to do exactly that - connect with the members and friends of Riverside Presbyterian Church, and hear what’s on their hearts and minds. Relationships are the core of our faith community - and we appreciate you taking time to have a one-on-one conversation around our core values: Belonging, Connecting, and Transforming.
π¬Your feedback will help guide our future as we strive to serve God through a vibrant faith community.
π―A Be the Church Connector will contact you soon (if they haven’t already) so that they may visit with you, give you a jar of honey, share church information, and ensure we have the most up-to-date contact information for you!
πHeard from your Connector but forgot to call or email them back? Try to make that a priority this week. We have an aggressive goal to meet with all members and regular attenders!

The Second Sunday in Lent
Luke 10:38-42 - Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at Jesus’s feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks, so she came to him and asked, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her, then, to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things, but few things are needed—indeed only one. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.”
#rpcjax #lent #pcusa #jaxchurch #fivepointsjax
The parable of the Good Samaritan begins and ends with the question, “Who is my neighbor?” and the answer is surprisingly, “the stranger.” The Samaritan, whose place of worship and customs are different from the lawyer who questions Jesus, is both a stranger and a neighbor to the man who was beaten and left in a ditch. In our world, many of our physical neighbors are strangers to us, and many of our neighbors—those closest to us—feel like strangers. If we align our intentions and actions, then maybe we need to reconsider who we label as “stranger,” and ask ourselves if we have acted as good neighbors.

βοΈInvitation to observe a Holy Lent βοΈ
We begin this holy season by acknowledging our need for repentance, and for the mercy and forgiveness proclaimed in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
We begin our journey to Easter with the sign of ashes. This ancient sign speaks of the frailty and uncertainty of human life, and marks the penitence of this community.
I invite you, therefore, in the name of Christ, to observe a holy Lent by self-examination and penitence, by prayer and fasting, by works of love, and by meditating on God’s word.

Our Lenten theme, “Everything In Between,” invites us to navigate the polarities in our lives with more faith, intention, and openness to be transformed. Each weekly sub-theme explores two supposed binaries, like “faith & works” or “rest & growth,” or “grief & hope.” We often consider these ideas to be opposing. However, as we explore these concepts within the scriptures, we find nuance and complexity. We find that these dichotomies are false. We might begin to see a full spectrum instead of black and white. We might find that God is present in between.
And so, this season, we invite you to look beyond black and white binaries and easy answers. We encourage you to take in the art, poetry, and reflections, imagining where God might be meeting us beyond the categories we create. This Lent, we're trusting that God shows up in shades of gray, rainbow hues, and everywhere in between.

π Receive Your Star Word π
The spiritual practice of receiving a “star word” is rooted in Epiphany, the day the Magi arrived at the stable in Bethlehem, guided by the light of the star.
On Sunday, star words were placed inside each bulletin, and mailed to children as part of this special tradition. These words are intended to inspire reflection, wonder, and discernment throughout the year ahead.
If you didn’t receive a star word—or would like one—you can still join in this meaningful practice!
β¨ Stop by the church office to pick one up.
β¨ Call us at 904-355-4585 to receive one over the phone.
β¨ Message us here or comment below to request a star word.
May your star word guide and inspire you in 2025! π

π―οΈπ The Twelfth Day of Christmas ππ―οΈ
As the Christmas season draws to a close, we reflect on the hope, love, joy, and peace shared during these holy days. Christmas isn’t just one day—it’s a full twelve-day celebration of Christ’s birth, culminating today.
Our sanctuary has been a breathtaking reminder of this sacred time, adorned with greenery, flowers, and light to reflect the life and beauty of Christ’s coming into the world. From Christmas Eve candlelight to joyful carols, we’ve treasured this season together.
Tomorrow marks the start of Epiphany, a time when we celebrate the arrival of the Magi and the revelation of Christ as the light to all.
β¨ May the light of Christ continue to guide you this Epiphany and beyond.

At the 4:00 pm Christmas Eve Service the story of Christ’s birth is told in segments interspersed with hymns. Children of the church dress up to help illustrate the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem. It’s not exactly the most peaceful telling of the story but it gives glory to God all the same!

It's RPC's Third Annual Epiphany Bonfire!
Epiphany, or Three Kings Day, celebrates the visit of the three wise men to the baby Jesus. We will commemorate the occasion like dusty and tired travelers of yore, by gathering around a fire with food and drink. Adults age 21 and up are welcome at the home of the Heegs in Mandarin (address shared week of) for an Epiphany Bonfire. Bring an appetizer or drink to share!

Merry Christmas, Riversiders!
Today we celebrate the arrival of Emmanuel—God with us. As the light of Christ fills the world, may your heart be filled with peace, hope, and wonder. Whatever today entails, may you take time to savor the beauty of this sacred day, and know that you are deeply loved by God and your Riverside family.

ποΈβ¨ Week 4 of Advent: Peace β¨π
When Mary visits Elizabeth (Luke 1:39–45), their meeting is a celebration of God’s promises fulfilled. Elizabeth’s blessing and Mary’s Magnificat (Luke 1:46–56) declare a deep, abiding peace rooted in God’s faithfulness: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.”
As we light the final Advent candle, may we rest in the peace of Christ—the One who lifts up the lowly, fills the hungry, and reminds us that God’s mercy is for all generations.

Earlier this month, the brand-new air conditioning unit was installed for both the Education Building and the Sanctuary. The outdated unit was removed from the Education Building roof to make way for the upgrade. Thanks to the funds generously raised over the summer, this much-needed improvement was able to be completed. We can’t wait for a refreshingly cool summer in 2025!

Yesterday was filled with warmth, music, and fellowship as we celebrated the season together. The morning began with a festive Christmas Breakfast in Bittinger Hall, where we shared delicious food and meaningful connections.
Then, we gathered for one of the most beloved services of the year: Lessons & Carols. With breathtaking music from the Riverside Choir and a string orchestra, alongside cherished carols and the powerful story of Christ’s birth, it was a worship experience to remember.

πΆβ¨ Week 3 of Advent: Joy β¨π
Yesterday, our Service of Lessons and Carols filled the sanctuary with joyful music and Scripture, celebrating the story of God’s redeeming love. Through the readings and carols, we reflected on the deep joy that comes from Christ’s arrival—the light shining in the darkness.
As we journey through this Advent season, may the joy of Christ’s presence continue to inspire us to sing, rejoice, and share God’s love with the world.

β€οΈ Week 2 of Advent: Love β¨
John the Baptist’s proclamation calls us to prepare the way of the Lord—not just through repentance, but through actions of love that reflect God’s grace. In this season of Advent, we are reminded that God's love is transformative. It straightens the crooked paths, fills the valleys, and brings salvation to all. (π from Luke 3:1-6)
Let us share God’s love by preparing the way, smoothing the rough places in our hearts, and extending kindness to one another.

β¨ Week 1 of Advent: Hope β¨
In times of uncertainty, when the world feels overwhelmed and the future unclear, we are reminded that our hope is in Christ. Luke 21:25-28 tells us that even amidst the chaos, we are called to stand tall and lift our heads—our redemption is near!
As we begin this season of Advent, let us focus on the hope we have in God's promises, knowing that even in the darkest moments, Christ is our light.
π Luke 21:25-28 - The Coming of the Son of Man
There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in a cloud’ with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

π¨ Worship and Wonder Is Back on November 3
π First Sundays through April 2025
βͺ 8:30–9:15 am in the Sanctuary
We experienced so much good energy around the Worship and Wonder services back in August, we are thrilled to now offer them regularly. Worship and Wonder follows a similar order of worship to Sunday mornings, guided by more creative movement and activities. With particular appeal to children and families, this service is relevant to all ages of worshipers, and all are welcome.
β This year, Reformation Sunday is October 27. It celebrates the beginning of the Protestant Reformation in 1517. Martin Luther’s “protest” to reform the Catholic Church, based on the conviction that everyone should have access to read the Bible, sparked an enormous movement across the globe. π
π And so, to this day, our own Protestant tradition strongly emphasizes the public reading of scripture and the proclamation of the Word. Join us as we give thanks for our Protestant heritage and the courage of those who have gone before us to reform the church to greater faithfulness!
@presbyhistory has highlighted one significant figure out of many in the Protestant Reformation--Argula von Grumbach (1492-c.1554), who wrote forcefully in defense of the Reformation, becoming the first published author among Protestant women. βοΈ Born into the noble von Stauff family in Bavaria, Argula was encouraged to read the Bible at a young age. Having lost her parents to the plague and then her uncle to a political execution, she married Friedrich von Grumbach in 1516.

Scroll for that shiny trash pickup before and after! π π€© And a special shoutout to our friends from @preservationjax who made a special appearance last month. π
βͺ Stewardship Sunday is this Sunday, October 20!
β€ Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” What is it about Riverside that stirs your heart? This year, we hope you’ll think of your pledge to the church as an expression from your heart. Your gifts help us all grow in love together—love for our church and our fellow disciples who comprise the Body of Christ.
This Sunday, during the offertory, we will bring forward our pledge cards (check your mailbox!) and dedicate our 2025 pledges to the God from whom all blessings flow. If you’ve pledged already, you can take forward slips in the pews that say “I have pledged.” Your pledge of any amount demonstrates your commitment to the mission and ministries of your church family and equips us to plan for the year ahead according to our means.
If you have not yet pledged and would like to do so online, please visit: www.onrealm.org/rpcjax/-/form/pledge/rpcgiving2025.
Thank you for your generous support! π
π₯π· Last Sunday, October 6, was World Communion Sunday, an annual occasion to remember our connectedness with Christ’s church all over the world. In a divided world and a divided nation, the witness of the Eucharist is a powerful sign of unity and shared humility before God’s throne of mercy and grace. As humans, we have, as the scripture says, “one Lord, one faith, one baptism.” We have a common need for God’s mercy and a common redemption in Jesus Christ. It’s a truth we need to remember every year, but perhaps especially in an election year.
πΌ RPC celebrated with special communion liturgy during worship, a beautiful hanging mobile in the Sanctuary, and a tableau vivant, French for "living picture," as our pastors, staff, and members participated in recreating Leonardo's "The Last Supper," as interpreted in mural-form by RPC member and artist, Kathy Stark. It was a grateful celebration of communion!
π€© Did you know RPC has the coolest youth group around? Such warm and welcoming students who love to help others and support the mission of the church.
Join Pastor Lauren, our youth, and Georgia (π© of course) for their weekly gathering tomorrow night, Sunday, 5:00–7:00 pm on the RPC campus in Bittinger Hall. We always start with a yummy dinner, then play games, pray together, share a devotional, discuss service projects, and much more. We hope to see you there!
Simply put, Riversiders have fun! π
Riversiders quarterly adults-only potluck was last Sunday at the Beau Rivage in Avondale, and everyone brought a dish or drink to share, including some spooky season sugar cookies! π·π» It was a great time to connect with fellow Riversiders, as well as enjoy a special time to meet some of our newest RPC members.
